Towering above the old passenger terminal, a new $35 million, 110,000 square-foot facility is taking shape at the Medford airport after years of planning.

People have stopped asking me when it's going to start," joked Airport Director Bern Case.

Visible from Highway 62, the two-story terminal is being built by Adroit Construction of Ashland and is being paid for through federal grants and 30-year revenue bonds. The bonds will be paid back through a passenger charge of $4.50 per ticket.

Much of the steel structure has already been put together, giving some idea of what the final building will look like.

Despite the cold weather, the construction is proceeding on schedule and is about 25 percent complete. Case expects to move in by January.

"It kind of gives you a split personality," said Case. "It's going so well, but there are so many things to keep track of."

At three times the size of the existing terminal, it will have a larger passenger holding area, an observation area and a restaurant on the second floor that will provide food for screened and nonscreened passengers. The Transportation Security Administration will have a larger baggage screening area but its offices will be at the airport's current administrative building.

The terminal will feature second-story loading bridges that will make it easier for passengers to board their planes...
